Corridraw

Progressed from ideas explored in the Writing to Escape... and The 360 Series, Corridraw is a set of linked poems exploring notions of Microcosm and Macrocosm in relation to Person and Place at Plas Bodfa.

The first stage of Corridraw, Escape Route, was part of the Sui Generis Artists Takeover, the inaugural event at Plas Bodfa, involving more than 60 international creatives. For me, the first installation day of intensive drawing was 10 April 2019...

I had been moving the writing from linear format, through chaotic cloud-forms, and into the radial. It felt right to do so, partly in response to the small black dots that marked surveyor's measurement points left scattered throughout the building. I began writing backwards from the simple marks, using these 'full stops' as starting points. The fixed point that marks the end of one phrase and the beginning of another. Just as the house was ending one phase, to start anew. The poems began to resemble cosmic structures, comets, nascent solar systems, solar coronas. The black spots suggested tiny black holes consuming or spewing forth expressive languages.

Until returning home that same day, I was unaware that the first ever photograph of a black hole, captured by the Event Horizon Telescope, had been headlining the international news. You can still read the report HERE on the BBC news website.

The second stage of Corridraw, Continuum, was to be part of Unus Multorum 2020, an even more ambitious project involving more than 100 international creatives and installation commenced during March. I was able to complete a few days of drawing before the UK went into lock-down in a delayed response to the global coronavirus pandemic. Unus Multorum 2020 was then moved into the virtual realm as a major online arts festival spanning six months.

Picking-up on the cosmic vibes of the previous year's Escape Route, I had moved from radial to rotational, the more organised circular motifs became an expressive discourse that related to the proportions, negative spaces and harder angles of Plas Bodfa, whilst functioning as a kind of westernised ensō. Frenetic thoughts circled a calmer centre, suggesting the (im)balance of interior and exterior spaces - of the built environment, of the biological and psychological structures. Unus Multorun 2020 was live as comet Neowise (C/2020F3) trailed across our shared skies, continuing the cosmic connection. The coronal resemblance to the virus was coincidental, though appropriate.
