Get to Know Remy by Reading Remy

'Tis the season when, traditionally, we look back on what we have done...

Since joining the Medium platform eight years ago, I have racked-up more than 555 ‘stories’ which tend to be in-depth articles about all sorts of art or extended reviews of movies, both classic and contemporary. The mainstream never really interested me that much, so expect cult movies with a leaning toward 1970s Italian Pulp cinema and the cinema of Asia — I curate two lists that reflect this: Giallo Mondo and CinemAsia. From time to time, I also share some of the extensive research into Folklore that informed This, That, and The Other - my epic fantasy fiction written with Zel Cariad now publishing as a web novel on Substack

Mid-way through 2018, I launched The Signifier and, in recognition of its consistent quality, it was among the first Medium publications to be invited to pilot Medium's Boost Nomination Program. I am fortunate that the curators have boosted my stories on a fairly regular basis but sometimes the stories most dear to me and those closest to my idiosyncratic interests get less attention than I hope for them.

The image below represents  a selection of articles that should give you a feel for what I’m about and what you may be in for should you subscribe to Medium. It’s not so much a ‘Best Of’ but a recommended reading list that may help to consolidate our connection. The titles in the caption are free-to-read 'friend links' that will take you to each article. If you enjoy any of these, please consider supporting quality writing by subscribing as this will give you access to all the writing published on the Medium platform, including mine.

Thank you for reading!

This, That, and the Other : The Web Novel

A fantasy trilogy written by Remy Dean with Zel Cariad, This, That and the Other, is imaginative storytelling on an epic scale. The story follows the special friendship between two girls who embark on a magical adventure together, across the three realms. A modern fable inspired by fairy tales and folklore, in the tradition of The Neverending Story, The Box of Delights, The Chronicles of Narnia...

Prologue and first two chapters are now live:

“Highly readable... The characters are great and the sense of magic is very real.”

- Lu Hersey (author of Deep Water)

They say, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you,” right? Well, of course that’s not really true. They also say, “Knowledge is power.” Well that’s not always true either… because, somewhere between not knowing and knowing, there lies imagination. That’s the key… the key that unlocks secrets.

It did, once upon a time, and it still does today…

“This is a delight to read. A lovely depiction of friendship and of course there’s magic involved!”
- Kim Vertue (author of Welcome to the Dragon Cafรฉ)

It began a long time ago, but for Rietta, it really began when she met Carla, another very special and extraordinary person, and realised that they shared the same dreams.

Or perhaps it all started when Rietta and Carla found the severely injured dog in the woods, becoming firm friends as they tried to nurse it back to health and happiness.

Then there was the thing that they glimpsed watching them from the shadows, and the mystery of the missing standing-stone… but when they find the key to another realm, well, then things really start happening!

“Imaginative Fantasy at its best... Wonderful work. Heartily recommended.”
- David Williams (author of the Ken Frane adventures)
